i think you should return the goddamned check. or just never cash it.
something i learned a long time ago about working with people with power/money is this: there are only three ways to do it.
one is to say: c'mon, let's do it; it'll be fun. some people who are goodhearted go for that. really.
the second one is to say: c'mon, let's do it; it'll make you look good. lots of people with notsogood hearts go for that. of course.
and the third one is to say: c'mon, let's do it, or you'll end up looking really bad. which is when you need to shame them, corner them, blackmail them, whatever it takes.
because you can't let the bastards get you down. you just can't. if you're doing good work, and they've got the money/power, you just gotta find the right button. and keep pushing.
because it's the principle of the thing, e. these people will talk like the day is long about "diversity," "equity," "caring" and whatever else is p.c. and au courant, but they don't walk what they talk. unless you give 'em a flashlight.
like the one in the barn, e. the cow's stomach, or whatever it is. who cares where you lead them. just lead. and take the fucking money.
